Jagannath Temple Puri

Jagannath Temple PurJagannath Temple or Sreekshetra is the major attraction. The temple covering 670x640 ft is surrounded by a wall of 20-24 ft high. On four sides there are 4 gates-the lion gate( Simhadra),elephants gate (Hastidwar), horse gate (Aswadwar), and Khanjadwar. Two rockcut lions are guarding the gate. Likewise the horse, tiger and elephant are placed by the southern, western and northern gates. The three lavishly embellished effigies of Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra are truly hypnotizing. The temple also has the largest kitchen in the world where 400 cooks show their culinary skills while dishing out 100 dishes for more than than 10,000 devotees.

 

The Swargadwar Puri

The Swargadwar PuriAt Puri it is customary to have the first bath at Swargadar which is a sacred place. It is believed that Sree Chaitanya, the founder of Vaishnav sect had his first bath at Swargadwar. Swargadar means the door(dwar) to Heavens. Pilgrims enjoy a ritualistic bath with a belief that a bath in the sea at Swargadwar release one of all the burden of one's past misdeeds and opens the path of virtues for him.

Since ancient time, Puri was accorded tha status of a prime spiritual centre. When the famous Hindu saint Adi Shankaracharya set up the oldest 'math'. Today the holy place has over 150 maths which dates back to 1000 years.

 

Gundicha Mandir Puri

Atharnala Bridge Puri

Built in 1300 AD, the Aatharonala bridge which is 88mt long on the river Muthiya is a wonderful specimen of the excellent artistic sense of the past. There are 18 holes in the stones with which the bridge has been made. It is said that King Indradumnya had sacrificed his own 18 sons here, for the welfare of his country. This site is visited by devotees in large numbers to pay respect.

 

Temple of Sakhigopal Puri

Temple of Sakhigopal PuriBeautifully adorned, the temple of Sakshigopal or the Truthful witness is another tourist attraction. Gratified by the prayers of his devotee Sree Krishna arrived, all the way from Vrindavan to Kalinga to appear as a witness but conditionally. Sree Krishna disappeared leaving only his stonified statue at the violation of those he had given. The temple came to have been built in course of time. It is a popular belief that without a visit to the Sakshigopal a trip to Puri remains incomplete.

 

Sudarshan Crafts Museum Puri

Named after the famous craftsman, Padmashree Sudarshan Sahu, the museum located on the station road houses wooden statues, paintings, stone statues. This training-cum-production center is situated near a magnificient Budhist temple built in 1985.

 

Rathyatra or the Chariot Festival Puri

Rathyatra or the Chariot Festival PuriThe annual Rath Yatra Festival at the Jagannath Temple usually takes place in the lunar month of Aashadha in June-July. Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra are adorned lavishly along with grandly embellished chariots. The three deities are drawn from the Srimandir Temple. This religious process of moving the three deities from one temple to another is popularly celebrated as the Rath Yatra. The chariot is drwn by around 4000 people accompanied by more than 200,000 pilgrims, Pandas or the priests and musicians. The Rath Yatra is the prime attraction of Puri when millions of devotees assemble to capture the auspicious sight and to seek blessings.
